The human body is a complex machine consisting of numerous organs. Organs, when divided, are made up of several tissues and tissues when subdivided, are made up of cells. Multiple numbers of organs together make up a complete system of the body. For example, all the bones in the body together make up the skeletal system, the sole function of which is to provide a framework to the body and protect the delicate organs like the heart, brain, lungs etc. Medical science as a branch consists of several diversions: orthopaedic for bones, a cardiologist for heart-related diseases, a dermatologist for skin ailments, etc.
We, as common people, often need clarification about the functionalities and responsibilities carried out by the stream of medical professionals. As per the department, two major streams of medical science are gynaecology and gastroenterology. Some people often reach out to a gastroenterologist in case of problems in semen retention, and people reach out to a gynaecologist whenever its problems regarding digestion.
“The major reason for this confusion existing is lack of awareness. Yes, we, as doctors, have an idea about the functioning of the human body. Still, we specialize in the functioning of a particular organ system and have more in-depth knowledge about the functioning of the same. It is just like a person who has been practising a skill for a long time has mastered the art of it, “ says a well-read gynecologist in Ludhiana.
Basic and major differences between a gastroenterologist and a gynaecologist
- A gastro- entro- logist is trained in studying your GI tract, which is the stomach, the inner lining, the intestines, the liver and the spleen. - A gastroenterologist deals with stomach-related issues like over-secretion of bile, indigestion, acidity and food poisoning, whereas a gynaecologist deals in issues like PCOS, childbirth, vaginal infections etc.
